A parallel directional Fast Multipole Method
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper introduces a parallel directional fast multipole method (FMM) for solving N-body problems with highly oscillatory kernels, with a focus on the Helmholtz kernel in three dimensions. This class of oscillatory kernels requires a more restrictive low-rank criterion than that of the low-frequency regime, and thus effective parallelizations must adapt to the modified data dependencies. We propose a simple partition at a fixed level of the octree and show that, if the partitions are properly balanced between p processes, the overall runtime is essentially ON logN/p + p. By the structure of the low-rank criterion, we are able to avoid communication at the top of the octree. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our parallelization on several challenging models.

A Parallel Shared Memory Implementation of the Fast Multipole Method for Electromagnetics
An implementation of the multilevel Fast Multipole method for time harmonic electromagnetic computations is presented. The method is parallelized for shared memory machines. A new parallelization scheme which is a hybrid between previous methods is proposed. Several symmetries and other methods that reduce the storage requirement are proposed. The most important symmetry is for the translation ...
متن کاملA parallel fast multipole method for elliptic difference equations
A new fast multipole formulation for solving elliptic difference equations on unbounded domains and its parallel implementation are presented. These difference equations can arise directly in the description of physical systems, e.g. crystal structures, or indirectly through the discretization of PDEs. In the analog to solving continuous inhomogeneous differential equations using Green’s functi...
متن کاملA Provably Optimal, Distribution-Independent Parallel Fast Multipole Method
The Fast Multipole Method (FMM) is a robust technique for the rapid evaluation of the combined e ect of pairwise interactions of n data sources. Parallel computation of the FMM is considered a challenging problem due to the dependence of the computation on the distribution of the data sources, usually resulting in dynamic data decomposition and load balancing problems. In this paper, we present...
متن کاملA Comparative Study of Multipole and Empirical Relations Methods for Effective Index and Dispersion Calculations of Silica-Based Photonic Crystal Fibers
In this paper, we present a solid-core Silica-based photonic crystal fiber (PCF) composed of hexagonal lattice of air-holes and calculate the effective index and chromatic dispersion of PCF for different physical parameters using the empirical relations method (ERM). These results are compared with the data obtained from the conventional multipole method (MPM). Our simulation results reveal tha...
متن کاملFast Hybrid Algorithms for High Frequency Scattering
This paper deals with numerical methods for high frequency wave scattering. It introduces a new hybrid technique that couples a directional fast multipole method for a subsection of a scattering surface to an asymptotic formulation over the rest of the scattering domain. The directional fast multipole method is new and highly efficient for the solution of the boundary integral formulation of a ...
